It quickly became a favorite of the theatre crowd, attracting Marlene Dietrich, Laurence Olivier and Dame Nellie Melba among others. The Ivy's fortunes waxed and waned but its boom years came around again in the 1990s when Hollywood stars such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson regularly dined there. The graphics are wonderful and we love the clever minimalist illustration of the glass with the cherry at the bottom. The Piccadilly Hotel was built in London in 1908 and was one of the capital city's most luxurious places to stay. There were 300 bedrooms, several top-class restaurants and Masonic Temples in the basement. Staff drew water from the property's own well so guests did not have to drink from the city's then questionable public water supply. By the time a guest of the hotel could sip a Piccadilly Cocktail from this 1950s list, there were no concerns regarding the quality of the ice in one's glass. The interior of this beautifully illustrated menu features a mermaid waitress and a fiendish and bearded merman chef while the front cover is stylishly minimal. Wheeler's Oyster Bar was established in Whitstable, a lovely small fishing town on the Kent coast, in 1856 by Richard Leggy Wheeler, a master mariner. In 1929, the restaurant opened in London and was the flagship for a chain of restaurants that has since all but closed down. Only the original Wheeler's Oyster Bar in Whitstable - still proudly serving fish dishes some 156 years after its birth - remains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Wheeler and Co. Ardizzone was an admired writer and illustrator of children's stories and other books. This 25 seat luncheonette, was located in his hometown of Waycross, Georgia. Darden promoted his expanding restaurant as providing \"Service with a Hop.\" With a sense of subtlety, he encouraged his guests to return regularly by placing the phrase, \"Enjoy Life, Eat Out More Often'', across the front of The Green Frog menu. Darden welcomed people without regard to race (not always a popular choice in the south at the time), offered his food at moderate prices, and paid acute attention to service. His restaurant became very successful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUtilizing the financial rewards of The Green Frog, Darden invested in several Howard Johnsons and hotels in Florida. The advent of air conditioning, the blossoming network of interstate highways, and a growing population, provided the path to opportunity for this entrepreneur. Residents and tourists needed places to eat. In 1968, Bill Darden thinking that a seafood restaurant might be successful in a non-coastal location, opened the first Red Lobster in Lakeland, Florida.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rest is definitely history. Darden, as the corporate entity is now known, grew to become one of the world's largest full- service restaurant company owning and operating more than 2,000 restaurants. It is the oldest named train in the United States, operating since November 1894 along the sunset route (though originally named the Sunset Express). The Sunset Route (originating in New Orleans) is the southernmost of the three gateways to the West Coast, envisioned through the Transcontinental Railroad Act. The other two embarked from Chicago, IL, and St. Louis, MO. The advantages of the Sunset Route were that unlike the other two, it did not have to assault the front range of the Rockies, and was an all-weather, year-round route that didn’t face the crippling snows of the Wasatch or Sierra mountain ranges to reach the Pacific coast. In 1930, the route was cut back to Los Angeles and the train carried coaches for the first time. In 1936, the train resumed running to San Francisco and was one of SP's first trains to receive air conditioning. In January of 1942, it was cut back to Los Angeles; the Sunset Limited was never again all-Pullman and never again ran beyond Los Angeles. Founded in 1924, with a roaring lion as its symbol, Metro Goldwyn Mayer had a stable of big stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Spencer Tracey, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, James Stewart and Gene Kelley. Between 1937 and 1957, it also had an in-house animation studio which produced many loveable cartoon characters - portrayed on the interior menu - such as Barney Bear, Droopy and Tom \u0026amp;\u0026amp; Jerry. The Commissary catered for the hundreds of people who worked on the massive studio lot and in this 1958 menu some of the dishes were named after weight-conscious MGM stars. Another pompier stands by with a hose attached to a barrel of wine. The menu cover was created by Jacques Faizant, one of France’s most popular illustrators. The interior menu is typewritten. Former patrons have written about how it was a swinging place in San Antonio, Texas, nestled among pool halls, dive bars, barber shops and shoeshine stalls in a strip mall downtown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOwned by Mrs Frenchy herself - also called Mamie Richards - it was a cheap place for burgers, steaks and booze. It offered special deal shoppers’ lunches for 25c, 35c and 55c in the 1940s. The rather magnificent cat on the front and back of the menu cover also featured on a neon sign on the outside of the restaurant and on the establishment’s advertisements in newspapers. He opened his first restaurant in 1930. \u003cem\u003e\"Clark was noted for serving good food at an affordable price. In the 1940s, he stuck with 5-cent coffee long after many competitors raised the price. He put on a $1.50 Thanksgiving dinner in 1942 and had customers standing in line. ``We didn't make much money on each customer, but we sure had a lot of customers,'' Clark once recalled.\" (Seattle New Times)\u003c\/em\u003e He was widely regarded as the \"father of the Seattle restaurant industry and ultimately sold the chain to the Campbell Soup Company in 1970 for an estimated $4.9 million. His favorite establishment, The Red Carpet, was included in the purchase. Located in a stylish building designed by the famous architect Alfred Newman Beadle V, the restaurant also had a bar that was originally called the Rooster Bar but became known as the Jungle Bar, because of its jungle-themed décor, complete with thick foliage and a waterfall. The owners had a pet monkey called Yum Yum and, not surprisingly, it was called “the most talked-about bar in America.”\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis 1955 menu describes dishes such as southern-fried chicken “served on a flaming sword” and chicken casserole “a la flame,” so table service was obviously quite an event. There was dancing nightly and a cabaret provided by a group of entertainers who were called Ambassadors of Melody and Humor.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis map – showing how all roads lead to The Flame – is full of whimsical details of people rushing by train, car, plane and on horseback to eat at The Flame. The club was known as America's Showcase in the 1940s because stars such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis performed here. Opened in 1937 as Ben Marden's Riviera Russian born impresario Bill Miller bought the nightclub in the late 1940s. It only operated during the summer and opened for one additional night on New Year's Eve. The fabled art deco building, painted yellow, had a retractable roof so guests could dance under the stars and also had a revolving stage. The Riviera was demolished in 1953 to make way for the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Mr Miller then moved to Las Vegas to work as entertainment director at The Sands before moving on to The Sahara, The Dunes and The Flamingo. They take the form of a one-sided dialogue between the author and other residents of a New England Boarding House. This lovely literary nod by the 2,500 room Hotel New Yorker for its breakfast menu shows that the management knew their clientele very well indeed. The 1940s and 1950s saw the Art Deco styled New Yorker at the peak of its popularity and it was widely regarded as one of New York's most fashionable hotels. Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey played there and the New York Observer noted that in the building's heyday, \"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eactors, celebrities, athletes, politicians, mobsters, the shady and the luminous—the entire Brooklyn Dodgers roster during the glory seasons—would stalk the bars and ballrooms, or romp upstairs\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\". The hotel went through a succession of owners until it was finally bought by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in 1975 for $5.6 million. The building was converted for use by the church's members. This lovely literary nod by the 2,500 room Hotel New Yorker for its breakfast menu shows that the management knew their clientele very well indeed. The 1940s and 1950s saw the Art Deco styled New Yorker at the peak of its popularity and it was widely regarded as one of New York's most fashionable hotels. Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey played there and the New York Observer noted that in the building's heyday, \"\u003ci\u003eactors, celebrities, athletes, politicians, mobsters, the shady and the luminous—the entire Brooklyn Dodgers roster during the glory seasons—would stalk the bars and ballrooms, or romp upstairs\u003c\/i\u003e\". The hotel went through a succession of owners until it was finally bought by Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in 1975 for $5.6 million. The building was converted for use by the church's members. The club was the symbol of café society. Movie stars, the wealthy, showgirls, politicians and aristocrats, all mixed here. El Morocco had the sophistication, Toots Shor's had the sporting crowd, but the Stork Club mixed power, money and glamour. Unlike its competitors, the Stork stayed open on Sunday nights and also during the summer months. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe club was not only full of celebrities, it was also full of intrigue. There was an episode when Billingsley's Oklahoma partners sold their shares to a man named Thomas Healy who eventually revealed that he was a \"front\" for three New York mobsters. Billingsley was kidnapped and held for ransom by \"Mad Dog Coll\" who was a rival of his mob partners. Before the ransom money could be collected, Billingsley's gangster partners put a bounty on Coll's head. He was lured to a telephone booth where he was shot to death. The secret gangster partners reluctantly allowed Billingsley to buy them out for $30,000 after the incident. Apparently the authorities were able to overlook the escapade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBillingsley's mistress, Ethel Merman, introduced him to the entertainment and gossip columnist Walter Winchell who called the Stork Club \"New York's New Yorkiest place\". What Winchell saw and heard there at his private Table 50 was the basis of his newspaper columns and radio broadcasts. Lucius Beebe, the author of the Stork Club Bar Book, was noted as the \"orchidaceous oracle of cafe society\", a gourmand, bon vivant and author, who chronicled the activities of the boldfaced celebrities at the Stork Club in his syndicated column, \"This Is New York\". Billingsley had around the clock coverage of the Stork Club that certainly enhanced and helped cement the clubs position and reputation. The cover of the Stork Club Bar Book, was created by Paul Rand, a giant of 20th Century graphic design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe club closed in 1965 and was replaced in 1967 by Paley Park, a \"vest pocket\" park that has been called one of the finest urban spaces in the US. The park was financed by the William S. Paley foundation (Paley was the founder of CBS) in honor of Paley's father. Packed at lunchtime with the Cub Room operating on a men-only basis. Cocktail time, crowd has a choice of the bar, the lounge or the main room where there’s music for cocktail dancing – followed by music to eat to. If you’re elegantly thrifty in a leisurely sort of way, you’ll take the flat-priced five-course BT (before taxes)( Dinner. Should you prefer to be fed faster, there’s a BC Dinner at stepped-up tempo for theater curtain beaters. Dance tempo ( and cabaret tax) resume at 9 with never a skipped beat till closing, and with a continuous two-way traffic of Stork glamorites arriving and departing. Attire is optional but when tables are scarce, strangers may find it to their advantage to present themselves at entrance chain ( solid gold) in their best evening togs. A young college man escorting a dazzling goddess is sure to get in, because Mr Billingsley is proud of having his tables embellished by the fairest. The eatery moved to Superior Street in 1917, when its name was changed. Dyer’s Chop House was a fixture when downtown Toledo was in its prime during the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. During lunch service, local businessmen and political leaders passed the display of lobsters on ice in the window and ate lunch at what was still a mid-day all male bastion of dining pleasure. Women were served only during dinner. In 1972, two women filed a civil discrimination suit against Dyer’s and U.S. District Court Judge Don J. Young ruled that women be admitted at all times. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe restaurant was highly regarded for its seafood and served celebrities including Jack Dempsey, Danny Thomas, Woody Herman and Bob Hope when they were in town. In 1960, Elmer Dyer’s two sons purchased the restaurant from him. Situated in New York’s Times Square, it was a popular pre-theatre meeting place and the restaurant thoughtfully provided the curtains-up time for all the plays that were on Broadway, including South Pacific, Dial M for Murder and The Seven Year Itch. The actual old poodle dog appears to have been a canine named Ami, who died 2 days after the original Poodle Dog moved from the original location to Bush Street in 1868. There the restaurant flourished with meals priced approximately for $1.00. The second floor boasted private dining rooms, perhaps appropriate for a rendezvous. On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors, there were intimately designed suites where diners could then venture for a very private dessert. The 6th floor was where banquets were held. This room and could serve upwards of 250 people.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Old Poodle Dog was destroyed by the earthquake and fire of 1906. The restaurant re-opened in 1908 but closed its doors once again during prohibition. In 1933 the venerable restaurant re-opened at 65 Post Street. A family squabble closed the place once again in 1980 but was given yet another life by Cal Lalanne, a descendant of one of the original owners in 1984 when the Ritz Old Poodle Dog re-opened for the last time. From this restaurant’s enviable site, one could observe the Mediterranean Sea and take in the soft waft of an ocean driven breeze. Restaurant Raynaud specialized in seafood dishes that we surmise were unusually fresh due to the probability that the sea fare was provided by local fishermen. The delightful image of an elegantly dressed and well-fed gentleman that graces the menu’s cover suggests that an elite clientele would be assured of a first class meal. A couple of glasses of wine to go with a whole lobster...count us in! We’re not sure why this region was celebrated at a dinner held at Au Vendome, which was located in the south of France. We do know that this meal was prepared and presented by one of Paris’ great chefs of the day, Raymond Oliver, of Le Grand Véfour, one of the most celebrated restaurants in Paris. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLe Grand Vefour originally opened in 1784 and was closed from 1905 until 1947. The rejuvenated restaurant re-opened in 1948 with Oliver in the kitchen and a menu designed by Jean Cocteau.
