This illustration, by famed naval artist William McDowell (1888-1950), shows figureheads from some of the more prominent ships throughout history, from a Roman attack boat, all the way to the Cutty Sark, which currently sits next to the river Thames at Greenwich, and operates as a tourist attraction.
In its day, the RMS Berengaria was the pride of the Cunard fleet and sailed from the English port of Southampton to New York. It was known as “the happy ship” because of its luxurious accommodations and fine service at sea.
With capacity for nearly 4,000 passengers in four classes, it was a true giant of Britain’s mercantile fleet. Entertainment in the evenings was a huge part of passenger enjoyment.
